Jonathan`s specialist interests with spinal surgery are degenerative conditions of the Lumbar spine, Spinal Trauma, Metastatic Disease of the Spine and Adult and Spinal Deformity especially Scoliosis Surgery. Jonathan qualified from ST Thomas` Hospital medical School, London University and undertook his Orthopaedic Training as part of the South-East Thames Higher Surgical Orthopaedic Training Program, gaining the FRCS (Orth&Tr) in 1998. He undertook specialized Spinal Surgical Training as a Spinal Fellow at the Centre for Spinal Surgery, Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham for 14 months and completed his spinal training as a British Orthopaedic Association Travelling fellowship to renowned centres in the USA. Jonathan was appointed to the staff as a Consultant Orthopaedic and Spinal Surgeon to Guys and ST Thomas` NHS Foundation in October 1999 and has subsequently specialised further to be a dedicated Spinal Surgeon, becoming Lead Clinician for Spinal Surgery in 2006.
Jonathan has published widely within surgical peer review literature and is the Editor of a major surgical text book, Aird`s Companion to Surgery and pursues a research interest within spinal surgery focusing on the management of paediatric spinal deformity and the surgical management of spinal metastases. Jonathan is keen teacher of both undergraduates and post graduates being an MBBS Examiner and Chairman of AO SPINR UK.
Jonathan is active in the spinal community both nationally and internationally being:
- Honary contract to the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery
- Orthopaedic and Spinal Advicer to the Metropolitan Police
- Chairman of AO SPINE UK
- Visiting Spine Surgeon to the Gibralter Health Authority
